As a way of honoring the work and legacy of João Vasconcelos, the first Executive Director of Startup Lisboa, Startup Lisboa decided to reward the entrepreneur, or team of entrepreneurs, with project incubated at Startup Lisboa or with permanent and relevant activity in the municipality of Lisbon, which stands out for its leadership skills, and for the performance or evolution of the project, throughout the year.

Created in 2019, the João Vasconcelos Award - Entrepreneur of the Year, has the financial support of the founders of Startup Lisboa - Lisbon City Council, IAPMEI and Montepio Geral - and with the support of our alumni, with the selection of the winner.

Article 1º


The João Vasconcelos Award aims to reward and support entrepreneurs of a project incubated at Startup Lisboa or headquartered in the municipality of Lisbon, who stand out for their performance in the creation and/or expansion of their businesses.

Article 2º


It also has the following objectives:

  • Encourage and promote an entrepreneurial and initiative mind;

  • Encourage and promote innovation;

  • Appraising entrepreneurs according to their business potential and leadership profiles.

Article 3º


All entrepreneurs / teams of entrepreneurs who have their project incubated at Startup Lisboa or with relevant and permanent activity in the municipality of Lisbon at the time of the launch of this initiative, May 30, 2019, and have stood out significantly for their performance in the process of creating or expanding leading companies, can apply for the João Vasconcelos Award.

Article 4º

Application process

a) Applications must be submitted through the form available on Startup Lisboa’s website: www.startuplisboa.com

b) The application period runs from June 1st to August 31st, 2019 (until 11:59 pm);

c) Startup Lisboa reserves the right to unilaterally, and by means of a notice published on its website, to extend the deadline for submission of applications;

d) Each entrepreneur or team may only submit one application;

e) Within the scope of this initiative, entrepreneurs or teams applying for this award must be founders of the project submitted;

Article 5º

Evaluation Criteria

a) Applications will be subject to a pre-screening in order to verify if all eligibility criteria are met for all entrepreneurs;

b) The evaluation is based on the information contained in the application form;

c) Applications not complying with the aforementioned criteria in the 3rd article, or that do not have enough information to carry out the analysis, will be notified by email that they’re not advancing for further evaluation;

d) After the preliminary analysis, the projects will be submitted to a jury session, in order to select the winner of the prize;

e) This jury session will consist of a 3-minute presentation that should be supported by digital means, or others that the entrepreneurs consider appropriate. This jury session will be held after the deadline for applications, and will take into account the following criteria:

  • Vision and strategy

  • Resilience

  • Leadership and team management

  • Growth achieved by the project

  • International reach

f) The jury referred to in the previous point consists of members of Startup Lisboa’s team and by entrepreneurs of alumni startups;

g) The final decision will be made public in a specific session, taking place during the month of September;

h) Startup Lisboa will make every effort to ensure the selection of a winner, however, reserves the right not to award the prize;

Article 6º


The João Vasconcelos Award materializes in a monetary prize in the amount of 10,000 € (ten thousand euros).

The prize will be paid directly to the winning entrepreneur through a bank transfer, of which should be delivered to Startup Lisboa a confirmation receipt.

Article 7º


Startup Lisboa and the members of the jury commit to maintaining secrecy over the content of all information to which they have access under this initiative, including intellectual and industrial property, even after its completion, except to the extent of what is strictly necessary for the implementation of this initiative and promotion of this program.

Protection of data

The protection of the privacy and personal data of the candidates is of great relevance for Startup Lisboa.

Article 9º

Final considerations

a) Startup Lisboa reserves the right to amend this Regulation, at any moment, but will be giving notice of any modifications to the entrepreneurs who’ve applied;

b) Situations omitted or not contemplated in the present Regulation will be object of decision by the Direction of Startup Lisboa;

c) Participation in this initiative implies the express acceptance of the terms and conditions of this Regulation by the candidates.
